Taking Charge Of My Mental Health
For the previous two years, I have invested into my mental health by attending therapy. Last season in 2020 I did it for the first 6 months for the New Year, and this time I’m in therapy as well. It allowed me to address the issues of the past, so I can prepare for the future. It has encouraged me to gain a better understanding of myself, and it has helped me repair certain relationships in my life.
There were areas in my life that I was wrestling with that were keeping me imprisoned mentally, for example, I didn’t recognize that I carried so much unforgiveness in my heart towards particular individuals. I assumed I was free from various triggers, but boy was I wrong! Certain triggers would offset my emotions. Again, it allowed me to self reflect (a number of us find that hard to do) but let’s be honest, some issues I have dealt with is because of my poor decision-making. The self-reflection of yourself is necessary. Therapy also has assisted me with my goals and understanding how to balance them. I’m a Virgo (a perfectionist) so I create all these goals and seek to accomplish them all therefore it forced me to burn out.
In the African American culture we have this false narrative that if you attend therapy, they classify you crazy well I’m here to tell you that is untrue! It assists you to learn healthy coping techniques; it works to rebuild your self-esteem; it pushes you gain authority over your emotions, and it teaches you on how to deal with the circumstances that you are facing. Life trials and tribulations are going to occur (we have no control over it) but I know therapy has taught me how to overcome those challenges and not let the challenges overcome me!
